Greek government to give $1,423,000 to Mt. Athos

Despite the ongoing discussions about the separation of Church and state in Greece, authorities have decided to provide a one-time subsidy of $1,423,038 (1,240,000 euros) to the autonomous Greek monastic republic of Mt. Athos, reports Romfea.

The decision by Minister of Finance Euclid Tsikalotos to render help to the mountain’s 20 ruling monasteries and 2 of the larger sketes was made on Monday.

The Monastery of Simenopetra will receive the most support with $165,357.

The monasteries will receive:

5. Dionysiou: $119,577
6. Koutloumousiou: $52,057
7. Pantocrator: $82,635
