A new book about St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco, Recollections, published by the St. John the Wonderworker Foundation (founded in Moscow in 1996), was presented on February 4 at the St. Petersburg Diocese’s Spiritual Education Center, reports the site of the St. Petersburg Metropolia.

As part of the presentation, St. Petersburg resident Tatiana Erdenko spoke of two occasions where she received miraculous help from St. John when she turned to him in prayer.

The first case occurred when she was living in San Francisco, where St. John served in the last years of his life and where his relics repose. Her daughtered entered the Orthodox school named in honor of St. John, which is how the woman first learned of the great wonderworking saint.

One day they accidentally left a bag on the bus that had the girl’s school uniform, without which, according to school rules, she could not go to class that day. She realized that it was unlikely to get the bag back from the bus that day, and in desperation, Tatiana began to pray to St. John.

Returning home, they found the bag with the uniform, miraculously lying right inside the door.

Seven years later, the family returned to Russia. On the day of their departure, they went to pray at the relics of St. John. Eventually realizing they were late for their flight, they decided to read the akathist to the holy hierarch.

And the family again found a miracle waiting for them: At the airport they were told: “We got a call that you were on your way, so we waited for you.” Also, despite that they had a lot of overweight baggage, it was loaded easily and without charge.

The construction of a church is a sacrifice to God; to allocate a parcel of land for church services is to sacrifice unto God a part of your own property, but most of all it is a gift of your love, your zeal. Churches are not needed by God Whose throne is heaven and Whose footstool is the earth; it is we who need them.
