The well-known and influential priest, theologian, and professor Fr. George Metallinos reposed in the Lord on Thursday, November 19, at the age of 79, and his funeral was served the next day at the Church of St. Thomas in Ampelokipi, Athens.

The service was celebrated by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and a number of other hierarchs and clergymen of the Church of Greece, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.

The church was full of Orthodox faithful who wanted to bid farewell to their beloved Fr. George.

His body was then transferred to Playtera Monastery on the island of Corfu, where he was born in 1940 and where he was buried on Sunday, December 22, reports Romfea.

The burial was preceded by a memorial service celebrated by Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu. Speaking to the crowd of faithful at the monastery, Met. Nektarios emphasized that Fr. George combined three attributes: he was a priest and minister of God and man of true prayer; he was an excellent teacher, imparting his wisdom with love to his students; and he was a confessor of the faith in our difficult times.

“It is incumbent upon us all to continue the struggle of Fr. George, especially those of us who were his pupils and students,” Met. Nektarios exhorted.

The hierarch also expressed his confidence that Fr. George, together with Elder Ephraim of Arizona, will intercede for the faithful before the Heavenly throne.
