Orthodox journalist Yan Taksiur has finally been released from pre-trial detention in Kiev after five months.

Taksiur, the founder of the First Cossak outlet, was detained by the Security Service of Ukraine on March 10 and charged with treason. Since then, he was held without access to a lawyer or medical care, although he is suffering from cancer.

It’s claimed that Taksiur, who is a staunch defender of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, undermines Ukrainian state sovereignty.

Finally, on August 8, a Kiev court set a bail of $33,495 (1.24 million hryvnia) for the journalist.

On Saturday, Taksiur’s daughter Mariko announced that her father has been released from the pre-trial detention center. Though he will still have to face trial, he finally has the opportunity to receive treatment for his cancer, Mariko joyfully notes.
