Mt. Athos saved from fire by heavy rain

August 14, 2012

The rain began on August 11 and it rained all night with a few interruptions. By that time the situation had become critical as the fire stretched for 4 kilometers and almost reached Chilandar, just 1.5–2 km away from the fire, reports Romfea.

The wildfire that has destroyed thousands of hectares of virgin forests is under control now as military and rescuers are working on extinguishing the remaining seats of fire.

"The rain became a salvation for us", the civil governor of Mount Athos Aristos Kasmiroglu commented on this occasion.
