Oldest active Church in Russia follows Athonite typikon

Nizhny Arkhyz, November 14, 2013

On November 13, 2013, Bishop Theophylact of Pyatigorsk and Cherkessk served a Divine Liturgy in the Church of St. Elijah of St. Alexander Nevsky Monastery in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz. This is the oldest active church in Russia, originating from the 10th century.

The Monastery of St. Alexander Nevsky, now being restored, became one of the main destinations of the Bishop's working visit to The Karachay–Cherkess Republic. Here Bishop Theophylact communicated with Rector of St. Elijah Church Archimandrite Antony (Danilov), the brethren and pilgrims, reports the press service of the diocese.

The monastery has adopted the rule of Holy Mount Athos and its Liturgies are celebrated at night.

Archimandrite Antony and Hieromonk Mitrophan concelebrated with Bishop Theophylact. Numerous pilgrims prayed at the Liturgy.
