Washington, August 1, 2014

An exhibition dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the birth of one of the most venerated Orthodox saints – St. Sergius of Radonezh, has opened in Washington, reports ITAR-TASS.

The exposition is located at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in the capital of the USA. Several dozen photographs of rare icons of St. Sergius, images of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra as well as photographs made during the official solemn celebrations on the occasion of the Orthodox feast in Sergyiev Posad in the Moscow region are on exhibit.

As Yuri Zaytsev, Director of the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Washington noted, the 700th anniversary of the birth of St. Sergius of Radonezh was one of the most important events of this year.

“As far as we are concerned, we could not pass it over, so we decided to organize an exhibition of photographs which will be demonstrated in a slideshow and will tell our visitors about the life and heritage of St. Sergius of Radonezh,” said Zaytsev.

According to Zaytsev, by the example of his life, courage, fortitude and kindness the saint contributed to the consolidation and spiritual strengthening of the state. St. Sergius’ ascetic works today are a benchmark of the preservation of cultural and moral values, stressed the director.

The exhibition will last for a week and will end on August 8.
