St. Theophan the Recluse

Monday. [II Cor. 12:10-19; Mark 4:10-23

The Lord breathed the breath of life, and man became the image of God. It is the same with one’s own rebirth: the beginnings of a new life are set down and one’s image is renewed by the breath of the Spirit of God; and whence and how it comes is not known. This is a point of departure; from here the work begins of raising up the image to a perfect likeness. When we are reborn according to the image of the Creator by the Lord’s Spirit we are transfigured from glory to glory, but not without us, our work and effort; however it is God who creates and restores us by the grace of the Most Holy Spirit, according to faith in the Lord. Behold the ideal and method of fulfilling in oneself the image and likeness of God! People so often write about and discuss upbringing. Meanwhile, it is all determined in the word of God by several words. Undertake only to fulfil what is prescribed, and upbringing will go on successfully to the goal. This is God’s path; but it does not exclude human paths—to the contrary, it gives them direction and crowns their success. When only the human remains, upbringing usually is insufficient, even detrimental, and not rarely totally perverts those being raised; then the rest of life goes crooked. Where those raised in a crooked manner multiply, all of society becomes more and more crooked, both in life and in its attitudes. The end is universal crookedness; one bends in one direction, then another bends in another.

Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

The histories of Moscow and of the icon of Vladimir Mother of God are eternally inseparable. How many times did the Mother of God save the capital city from enemies through the grace of her holy icon? This icon has linked Apostolic times to Byzantium, Kievan Rus’ to Vladimir Rus’, and later to Muscovy, the Third Rome; as it is said, “there will be no Fourth.” The kingdom of Moscow was formed by divine providence and embraced the mystical ties of ancient empires, historical experience and traditions of other Orthodox peoples. The miracle working Vladimir icon became a symbol of unity and succession.

Commemoration of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and the deliverance of Moscow from the Invasion of Tamerlane

The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was painted by the Evangelist Luke on a board from the table at which the Savior ate together with His All-Pure Mother and Righteous Joseph. The Mother of God, upon seeing this image, exclaimed, “Henceforth, all generations shall call Me blessed. The grace of both My Son and Me shall be with this icon.”

The Meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

In the summer of 1395, there was an event that left a profound impression on the spiritual and historical life of the Russian people, and which became forever an example of faith and hope in God’s Providence and in the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalie

Day after day the holy martyrs endured such cruel and severe tortures that they were barely alive. The Emperor became angry that even under such tortures they would not deny their God. Finally he ordered for them a violent death. Their arms and legs were cut off and their bodies were thrown into a fire to be burned so that none of the Christians might gather their precious remains. But just at that moment, there burst forth thunder and lightning and a powerful rain which put out the fire. Natalie, together with other Christians took the bodies of the holy martyrs from the fire and rejoiced to see that God had preserved them from harm. A faithful Christian man and his wife then took the holy relics to Constantinople where they could be safely kept until the death of the impious Emperor.

Blessed Maria Ivanovna of Diveyevo

No one ever heard from her any complaint, moaning, or unhappiness, nor irritability nor lamentations over human unfairness. The Lord Himself glorified her among the people for her God-pleasing life, her great humility and patience. People began to notice that what she would say or warn about would come to pass, and that those with whom she stayed would receive grace from God.
