The Ukrainian Orthodox stavropegial Monastery of St. Paisius Velichkovksy in Crimea was the victim of arson over the weekend, the abbot reported on the monastery’s website.

“Our monastery really bothers someone,” writes the abbot Archimandrite Gabriel. “Unknown persons threw a combustible mixture onto the roof of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ that was under construction…”

“Lord, forgive them; for they know not what they do,” Fr. Gabriel writes.

The monastery brethren intend to move ahead and rebuild the church, confident that the Lord is with them: “It seems to us that the Lord shows and says, ‘Fear not, I am with you! There will be a resurrection! There is no Pascha without Golgotha!”

Despite the attack, the life of the monastery, including the liturgical services, was not interrupted.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations has not officially confirmed that the fire was caused by arson, reports sevastopol.su, though it is seriously investigating the possibility, noting that the church, being under construction, did not have any electrical wiring yet or any combustible substances inside.
