The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Zagreb, Croatia, suffered severe damage when a 5.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the city in late March.

A little more than two months later, services resumed in the cathedral when His Eminence Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb and Ljubljana celebrated the Divine Liturgy there on Sunday, May 31.

And now the Serbian faithful in Zagreb will receive help from their brothers in Republika Srpska for repairs on their beloved cathedral.

While on a visit to Zagreb, Milorad Dodik, a Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, paid a friendly visit to Met. Porfirije on Wednesday, September 16, at the Katarina Brankovic Kantakuzin Serbian Orthodox Public Gymnasium, reports the Metropolis of Zagreb.

The two discussed issues of the Serbian Orthodox and broader Serbian community in Croatia and the renovation of the Cathedral of the Transfiguration.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Dodik announced that Republika Srpska will donate $115,850 (100,000 euros) to rebuild the damaged cathedral.

“The church is very important for maintaining the Serbian identity both in the Republic of Croatia and anywhere in the world,” said Mr. Dodik.
