“God made a Covenant and signed it with His blood”—Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus

The sacrifice of Golgotha is continuous, and will be with us in every Divine Liturgy until the end of the ages, His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus of the Greek Orthodox Church said yesterday.

Preaching during the Vesperal Divine Liturgy at the Church of St. Sophia in Piraeus yesterday, Holy Thursday, Met. Seraphim emphasized that, “God made a Covenant, that is, an agreement with all people of all ages and signed it with His own blood to redeem the world from death.” In the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the Lord gave Himself forever and sanctifies the whole man—both body and soul, His Eminence said, reports Romfea.

The Lord’s “sacrifice was offered once, but it continues in every Divine Liturgy,” he added.

God honors us by entering into us by Holy Communion and uniting Himself with us. “God the Father recognizes His Son” in us, the Metropolitan stressed.

The Cross of Christ shows us two things, he continued: “How much God loves man,” and “how much value each of us has before the All-Holy God.”

However, nothing is unconditional, but “our consent, our free acceptance” is required, “because we are free to co-sign the Covenant that Christ gives us with His Blood.”
