Elderly laborer found hanged in Athonite cell

A worker who had lived on Mt. Athos for more than 50 years was found hanged in his cell recently.

The 82-year-old man from Lemnos was considered one of the best stone masons working on the Holy Mountain. The cause of death is unknown, although reports indicate that he has been experiencing psychological problems lately, reports makthes.gr.

The man was discovered on Wednesday by the monks with whom he was staying in Karyes, the Athonite capital. Although the man was retired, he chose to remain on the Holy Mountain.

The case is being investigated by the Mt. Athos Police Department, and his body has been transported to Thessaloniki for an autopsy.

Fr. Euphrosynos, 58, went missing when he took a fishing boat out on Monday, December 20.

What a horrible tragedy. What has the world come to, when an aching soul cannot find rest at one of the holiest sites on earth.

How easy is it for outsiders / non-monks to gain access to the monastery? With all of the spikes in demonic activity these last few years especially, its possible some deranged person could've snuck in, hung him, and made it look like a suicide to cover his tracks. On an aside note, I must say: that is one of the coolest monasteries I've ever seen. I almost wouldn't mind becoming a monk if I were guaranteed a cell overlooking the ocean someplace like that. There's a Catholic monestary near where I live. Was established like 100+ years ago, waaay out in the boonies, but today has a semi-major highway running only a hundred yards from it, and a housing plan almost across the street. Would totally kill the vibe
