His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine has sent fraternal greetings to the new First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, published on the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church today.

His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan was elected by the ROCOR Council of Bishops on Tuesday, and his election was confirmed by the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate the next day.

In his address, the Ukrainian primate rejoices in the election of Metropolitan-Elect Nicholas and wishes him God’s blessing on all his future endeavors.

His address reads in full:

Your Eminence, dear Vladyka Nicholas!

Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your election as the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad!

The cross of the primatial ministry which Your Holy Eminence has taken upon your shoulders is a continuation of the age-old labor of your God-loving and God-enlightened predecessors in standing before the throne of God for the flock of the Russian Church Abroad. I sincerely rejoice that the Lord has chosen you and placed you at the helm of the Ark of salvation to guide those who sail upon it to the Heavenly City, that those who are perishing and are overwhelmed in the sea of life might find a firm and unshakable foundation on the rock of the true faith of Christ.

Ascending together with you in the joy of the upcoming celebration—your enthronement as the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, we fervently entreat the Most Gracious God to strengthen Your Eminence in health and prosperity for the good of the Mother Church. We hope that the relations that have developed between our Churches over the years will continue to be filled with the spirit of friendship, good cooperation, and Christian love.

I prayerfully wish Your Holy Eminence peace, every blessing, and the all-powerful help of God in cultivating the spiritual vineyard planted by the right hand of the Lord. May the All-Merciful Lord ever be your refuge and strength (Ps. 45:2). Many years to you!

With brotherly love in Christ,

ONUPHRY,
METROPOLITAN OF KIEV AND ALL UKRAINE
PRIMATE OF THE UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Vladyka Hilarion, whom I knew personally, was an outstanding hierarch. He fully and completely devoted himself to service to the Church.

“We are grateful to God for all that the Lord allows us. The Lord gives us to drink the cup of sorrow, and we drink it with humility and gratitude to God. We believe that, in spite of all the trials that have been permitted to us, the Church of Christ will remain unbreakable forever and the gates of hell will not overcome it,” the Ukrainian primate writes.

On Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of July, a dual feast awaited the clergy, parishioners, and guests of St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ. On July 18, prior to the beginning of the All-Night Vigil, the myrrh-streaming Hawaiian-Iveron Icon of the Mother of God arrived at the cathedral from Jordanville, NY. The clergy came out to greet the Most Holy Theotokos and returned in procession to the cathedral, where the Icon was greeted by His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, who led the All-Night Vigil. His Grace was co-served by cathedral and visiting clergy. Upon completion of Vigil, the clergy and faithful piously venerated the myrrh-streaming Icon; the faithful were anointed with myrrh from the holy Icon, and each also received a piece of cotton soaked in holy myrrh.
