But what shall we do if sin completely enslaves our soul, as if covering it with a tombstone; and so day after day goes by and passions start to exude their sinful stench, just as with Lazarus? What should we do then? Well, then we need confession, the sacrament which Christ established after His Resurrection, when He said to His disciples, “Receive ye the Holy Spirit: Whose so ever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven” (Jn. 20:22-23).

God’s providence leads us through life; and how good it is for those who can hear it in time, who try to understand God’s will for themselves. If we make plans for one thing or another but find numerous obstacles on our path to attaining it, we have to slow down and try to discern—is this plan God’s will for us? Sometimes the Lord protects us from danger, holds us back from our impulsive race through life, but we don’t understand it, we keep fussing, insisting upon our own will, instead of simply stepping back, waiting a bit, trying some other way...

The enormous number of antiquities concentrated in Syria’s rather small territory astonished us. Here is the cave near Damascus where, according to tradition, Cain killed Abel. The mountain could not endure such an evil deed and cried out with a great voice. It is not known exactly whether this really happened, but the cave does indeed have the form of a wide-open mouth: there is a tongue, teeth, and larynx. There are still markings pointing out various places: here the Forefather Abraham prayed, and here stood the Great-Martyr George. Everything is alive…
