I was born in Western Canada, in the Province of Alberta, where there were a great many Ukrainian settlers. My parents immigrated to Canada in 1929 from Ukraine, which at that time was part of Poland. They had lived in Volhynia guberniya. After World War One, Poland was granted the western part of Ukraine—Volhynia oblast, Galicia, etc.

Thankfulness is a state of being and a way of life for all Orthodox Christians, for you and me. A thankful spirit is a key characteristic of a Christian. It sets us apart from the world. It makes us different. Thankfulness is more than a comparison of our own circumstances to someone else's. It is more than having enough food to eat, a nice home, good health, or financial security, because any of these can be lost in an instant. Thankfulness is being grateful to God for who we are, His sacrifice for us, and the hope and joy of everlasting life.

This Akathist, also called the “Akathist of Thanksgiving,” was composed by Protopresbyter Gregory Petrov shortly before his death in a prison camp in 1940. The title is from the words of Saint John Chrysostom as he was dying in exile.
Dr. Maria Khoury
In a video by Calvin College, Dr. Maria Khoury talks about living and raising a family in one of the few remaining Christian villages in the Palestinian West Bank. Her village, the Biblical Ephraim, is now called Taybeh.
My decision did not come quickly just in a vacuum. The Russian Orthodox Church has also shown mercy in words and in deeds. I want to belong to the Church where I can see love and mercy. In the moral and theological views, the Russian Orthodox Church is seriously Christian, when the Western Churches are quite secular.
