In literally a few weeks, a group of Orthodox Christians established a parish in the Russian Orthodox tradition. This group included not only Russians but dyed-in-the-wool Americans. Today St Seraphim Parish also boasts Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians and other Orthodox Christians.

The Orthodox Christian Church is present in well-established ethnic communities. We attended worship services in Russian, Serbian, Greek, Afrikaans, and English. In addition, since the end of apartheid, the Metropolitan has actively encouraged outreach to the residents of the black African and colored townships, and mission churches are developing!

I suggested that the Australian conferences be held on a more regular basis. They hold such conferences in America annually. The first four conferences in Australia were held once every two years, but then there was a disruption. The singers need more regular meetings.

We were equally impressed with the three monasteries we visited, which offered a glimpse into the incredible life that they are developing. Many of the monastics come from various places in Czech and Slovakia as well as other central and eastern European countries. There is definitely a growing monastic movement, not unlike that found in North America. Finances, of course, are a difficulty, but the monasteries offer a wonderful witness to the faith.
