A Joint Pastoral Conference of the Moscow Patriarchate and the German Diocese tf The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia Is Held

On December 23-25, 2007, a joint pastoral conference of the Berlin Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate and the German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was held. This was the first such conference of the Russian Orthodox Church since the reestablishment of the unity within the Local Church.

The aim of the visit of His Eminence Archbishop Hilarion to the parishes of the Orthodox Mission in Indonesia was to lend support to the clergymen and laypersons who do missionary work throughout the parishes of the Orthodox Mission in Indonesia, to meet with local authorities on the status of Orthodox Christians in this country and to strengthen the Mission through the ordination of worthy candidates to the priesthood. Archbishop Hilarion was joined by His Grace Bishop Mark of Egoriev and Archimandrite Daniel (Byantoro) and their fellow travelers.

The biggest impression on me was the divine service in the heart of Russian Orthodoxy, under the vaulted ceilings of the grandiose Uspensky Cathedral of the Mother of God, the resting place of the Moscow Primates. Here lies St Ermogen, a shining example of staunchness in the Orthodox Faith during the Time of Troubles. His guidance led our ancestors to stand firmly for their faith, their Fatherland, and during his imprisonment, yet with his blessing, Archimandrite Dionisy of Holy Trinity-St Sergius Lavra and Avraamy Palitsyn, his protector, sent missives to inspire the defenders of the Muscovite state.

Anyone who looks at our contemporary life from the perspective of the normal life lived by people in earlier times — say, Russia, or America, or any country of Western Europe in the 19th century—cannot help but be struck by the fact of how abnormal life has become today. The whole concept of authority and obedience, of decency and politeness, of public and private behavior — all have changed drastically, have been turned upside down except in a few isolated pockets of people — usually Christians of some kind — who try to preserve the so-called "old-fashioned" way of life.
