Monasteries have always been the strongholds of Orthodoxy and bastions of spirituality. From the foundation of a monastery cities would often spring up. In ancient times chronicles were kept and scholarship was developed.Orthodox monks supported the starving in years of crop failure, cared for the sick, and most importantly, always stood at the front lines of spiritual warfare—praying to God for the whole world, for every one of us.

And now we, Orthodox Albanians, are travelling with the mission to Kosovo, meeting with Kosovars and trying to convince them of the fact that Orthodoxy exists for all nations, that Orthodoxy is as natural for Kosovars and Albanians as it is for Serbs and other nationalities, and that if we had been with Christ we would not have been bogged down with all these troubles.

Because of liturgical and pastoral encounters like this, in places where other missionaries have not gone or will not go, Orthodoxy continues to grow, not only near the Pacific coast and the Highlands of Western Guatemala, but also in Southern Mexico. They come to us by word of mouth, not one or two persons at a time, but whole communities, guided by their elders into the loving care of Archbishop Athenagoras and the Guatemalan clergy.
