NRA president, Wayne LaPierre says that instead of banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, we need to do something about violent movies and video games. He is technically correct that the cause of gun violence is not the gun. It's the violence, but sometimes the root problem is not the one that needs fixing. Mr. LaPierre's uncompromising ideology could benefit from a little oikonomia.
For Eastern Orthodox Christians, icons are sacred images that represent Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints or events in the life of Christ. In the Byzantine era, Christians created icons in many media such as gemstones, ceramic, precious metals, mosaic and fresco. Byzantine icons varied greatly in size and shape, with some even worn around the neck. Byzantine Christians believed that focusing on an icon helped them communicate with the figure represented by the icon, aiding the Christian’s prayer in its journey.
The interior of the 100-year-old stone church on Camp Meade Road has been painted many times, always pure white. But since July, many new colors have been appearing on the walls. Seraphim O’Keefe, an iconographer, has been filling the church with images of holy men and women from across the centuries.
In what has become a decades old “Living Tradition,” clergy and faithful alike filled the cathedral for the celebration of the festal Divine Liturgy and the Great Blessing of Water.
