Tallinn, Estonia, June 18, 2018
His Eminence Metropolitan Evgeny of Tallinn and All Estonia celebrated his first services as the primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church in Tallinn’s St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral this past weekend.
Formerly the Archbishop of Verey, Met. Evgeny was elected to head the Estonian Church on May 29 and was elevated to the rank of metropolitan on June 3.
Met. Evgeny celebrated the All-Night Vigil on Saturday night, concelebrated by bishops and clergy from the Estonian, Polish, and Lithuanian Orthodox Churches. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated the next day, also with visiting clergy.
A Moleben of Thanksgiving was celebrated at the end of the Divine Liturgy. His Grace Bishop Lazar of Narva then addressed Met. Evgeny with a welcoming speech on behalf of the clergy of the Estonian Orthodox Church, emphasizing the Church’s mission of drawing new souls to Christ.
“All our efforts are primarily aimed at attracting the younger generation to religious life. After all, they, having entered into adult life, will have to preserve and carry the chalice of the living water of our faith and Orthodox traditions without spilling any. They will have to replace us at the altar of God, fill the churches, and lead the ship of the Church on the waves on the correct course on the waves of the sea of life,” Bp. Lazar preached.
Bp. Lazar then presented Met. Evgeny a cross and two Panagias as a gift from the Estonian Orthodox Church. His Eminence Metropolitan Innokenty of Vilnius and Lithuania also presented him with a copy of the Vilnius Mother of God.
Met. Evgeny thanked all for their warm words and gifts, and asked all present to pray that the Lord would give him strength for his upcoming service in the Estonian Church.
