Valaam Monastery gives $15,000 for restoration of wooden church lost to arson

The spiritual council of Valaam Monastery has decided to transfer about $15,000 (1 million rubles) for the reconstruction of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos Church in Kondopoga, Karelia, that was lost to arson on August 10.

The monastery is also committed to continuing to help in the future, reports the monastery’s website.

According to preliminary expert assessments, the restoration of the church i will cost nearly $1.5 million (100 million rubles). As OrthoChristian.com previously reported, Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov has also donated 1 million rubles, and Karelian head Arthur Parphenchikov has donated 100,000 rubles.

Valaam abbot Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk is also a member of the board of trustees created to deal with the restoration of the Dormition Church.

“The abbot and brethren of Valaam Monastery, aware of their Christian duty and responsibility, and the complexity of the upcoming works, are happy to express their readiness to take part in the good work of restoring the burnt church, which was a unique monument of Russian wooden architecture,” the statement on the site reads.

The 18th-century wooden Church of the Dormition in the village of Kondopoga was set ablaze by a 15-year-old Satanist on August 10. The church was one of the most famous examples of northern Russian architecture, known throughout the world.
