Moldovan President Igor Dodon told RIA-Novosti today that he supports the initiative to convene a pan-Orthodox Council to discuss ways to overcome the current crisis and schism in the Church, and he even proposed holding the council on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

“I fully support the initiative to call a pan-Orthodox Council, expressed by Patriarch John X of Antioch. I am presenting the initiative to hold a pan-Orthodox Council on the territory of Moldova,” the president said.

The Holy Synod of the Antiochian Church had previously made the same call, as have several hierarchs from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and His Beatitude Metropolitan Sawa, the primate of the Polish Orthodox Church.

The Moldovan head of state noted that the current situation causes him regret and that the authorities in Orthodox countries and heads of the Local Churches should do everything possible to overcome the schism.

“I am confident that we will be able to find solutions to this situation together,” the president added.
