Philaret will not nominate himself to lead the new church, but he could accept the nomination of others, Zorya explains.
Kiev, November 15, 2018
Any plans towards creating a new autocephalous Church in Ukraine without the participation or consent of Philaret Denisenko, the head of the schismatic “Kiev Patriarchate” (KP), are doomed to failure. The “Patriarch” is not out of the game yet, says Evstraty Zorya, the speaker for the KP.
“Let everyone—both friends and foes—be sure and know: All ‘plans’ to do something without the patriarch [Philaret—OC], without his consent and participation, are doomed to failure,” Zorya wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.
As OrthoChristian previously reported, both Philaret Denisenko and Makary Maletich, the head of the schismatic “Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church,” sent letters to Constantinople promising not to nominate themselves to lead the new church that Constantinople is creating. At the same time, Philaret did ask to be styled “Honorary Patriarch.” Further, it was reported that Philaret and Makary were informed by Constantinople that they could not participate at all in the election process.
“And we, the episcopate, clergy, and flock of the Kiev Patriarchate will not allow to neglect or reject he who has already suffered so much neglect for our sake but has not retreated or been broken!” Zorya added emphatically.
The KP Press Secretary further explained that Philaret’s agreement to not nominate his own candidacy does not mean he is out of the game, but only that he will not nominate himself.
“That is, neither the patriarch, nor any of the other hierarchs can nominate themselves. If the participants in the council OFFICIALLY propose Patriarch Philaret as a candidate during the council, he will officially voice his response to this proposal at the COUNCIL,” Zorya further writes.
As far as he is concerned, all of the news swirling around about the unification council are just thoughts on the subject for now.
“All plots and plans aimed against our primate are doomed to failure, for he serves God and the Church, so God and the Church help him,” the KP representative writes, adding that without Philaret’s signature, “there will be no legal changes to the UOC-KP.”
