A number of spiritual treasures were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church yesterday at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral, as 10 pre-revolutionary icons that had been stored by the Mosfilm film studio were personally handed over to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, reports patriarchia.ru.
The icons were returned by Mosfilm CEO and Chairman of the Board Koren Shakhnazarov, who expressed confidence that the holy images would find worthy homes in churches where they could be venerated by the faithful.
Pat. Kirill thanked the CEO and noted that they would indeed be placed in churches currently under construction after they are restored, “because the presence of an ancient icon in new churches is a very important evidence of succession.”
Shakhnazarov also expressed his gratitude to Pat. Kirill, saying: “Thank you very much for what you are doing to restore Orthodoxy and faith in our country.”
The 10 icons returned were:
-
Sts. Theodosius and Anthony (19th C.)
-
Virgin Enthroned (19th C.)
-
St. Vladimir (19th C.)
-
Beheading of St. John the Baptist (late 19th-early 20th C.)
-
Holy Martyr Christopher (19th C.)
-
Old Testament (“The Angel of the Old Testament”) (second half of the 19th C.)
-
Archangel Michael (second half of the 19th C.)
-
Mother of God “of the Sign” (late 19th C.)
-
Virgin Enthroned (early 20th C.)
-
An unknown saint, with a metal riza (late 19th-early 20th C.)
Mosfilm has about 600,000 units of storage, including a separate repository for icons, with a collection assembled over the past 95 years since the establishment of the studio.
