Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral will host the upcoming 2nd International Congress of Choir Directors and Singers of the Russian Orthodox Church, scheduled for October 24 to 26, reports the press service of the Church-Public Council for the Development of Russian Church Singing.

The Congress’ main task is to discuss the preservation and development of the centuries-old traditions of Russian Church singing and pressing issues and problems of singing in churches and monasteries, to search for solutions to these problems, and to share experiences.

Choir directors, teachers, and composers from the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia will make presentations and share their ideas and experiences at the Congress, which is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the repose of the great director and composer Pavel Chesnokov.

The Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute’s (PaTRAM) album, “Teach Me Thy Statutes,” featuring works of Pavel Chesnokov, under the direction of Maestro Vladimir Gorbik, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy in the Best Choral Performance category.

Those wishing to take part in the Congress as an official delegate, to participate in the plenary sessions and master classes, and to sing at the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy as part of the consolidated choir must pay a fee of 2,500 rubles (about $38) upon arrival, which includes the cost of lunches on the days of the Congress.

"Our culture is drowning in music; many people are to some extent addicted to having music playing in the background throughout their day, and much of that music does not edify but draws us away from Christ in subtle or sometimes blatant ways, to say nothing of the resulting absence of silence. With the choral advent calendar, I’m trying to give people an opportunity to be more intentional about their music, and to help folks find music which can warm their hearts and help them draw near to God."

"I think if you really care then you’ll do something, you’ll do better, you’ll do really well if you really care. Christ said Where your treasure is there your heart is. If the liturgy in your church is sung poorly, or half-heartedly, or in a slovenly or disorderly manner, then your heart’s not there. It can’t be."
