Moscow, October 15, 2019
The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet on Thursday, October 17 at the Patriarchal residence at Danilov Monastery in Moscow, under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, reports the Patriarchal press service.
It is expected that the hierarchs will discuss the results of Saturdays’ session of the Bishops’ Council of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Following the session, the Greek press team, including Metropolitan Hierotheos (Vlachos) announced that the Greek Church had decided to recognize the OCU, and the news spread quickly, causing consternation throughout the Orthodox world.
However, two prominent hierarchs of the Greek Church, Metropolitans Seraphim of Piraeus and Seraphim of Kythira, have since written that no such decision was made, as no vote was taken on the matter. As they explained, the hierarchs affirmed the Holy Synod’s earlier decisions to acknowledge Constantinople’s right to grant autocephaly and the Archbishop Ieronymos’ privilege and prerogative to handle the issue on behalf of the Greek Church.
Hopefully the Greek Church will offer an official clarification.
