For the hermits, silence was the battlefield of continuous spiritual warfare. In solitude, the usual worldly concerns disappeared, and a person was left face to face with his own passions and with temptations from the evil one and the demons.
We don’t need silence for silence’s sake, but that within it you might meet the one Who wants to speak with you; that you might, in silence, meet the Bridegroom of your soul.
The mountain is a Biblical symbol of meeting with God, a place of Divine revelation.
Every creature in the world has its God-given purpose and mission.
We prepare for death, but in reality, it’s preparation for a passage, for crossing over. To make it across, we need special equipment, and sustenance, and a good guide.
Repentance destroys hell in the penitent’s soul and transfers him to Paradise.
