Three men were arrested during Holy Week in connection with a rash of church robberies.
In particular, seven churches were broken into and robbed in a matter of hours from the evening of Palm Sunday to Holy Monday morning.
The perpetrators, foreigners aged 27, 34, and 39, were detained on Holy Monday morning, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
The three were nabbed at the Port of Kyllini on the mainland, trying to flee the nearby island of Kefalonia.
They were found with nearly $3000 in euros, jewelry, and offerings made by the faithful to wonderworking icons, part of which was returned to the rectors of the robbed churches. The car they used during the burglaries was also confiscated.
The investigation following the arrest also revealed that they had robbed another 11 churches in Kefalonia from late September to early November.
