A Kiev court extended the around-the-clock house arrest of the abbot of the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra for this week.

His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod, who has headed the monastery for 30 years, was initially given two months of house arrest in early April. He must stay at a residence outside of Kiev, unable to attend services at the Lavra.

He was also ordered to wear an ankle bracelet.

And yesterday, May 29, the measure of restraint was extended for another month, until July 1, the Lavra reports.

The abbot’s defense said it would appeal this decision.

After his appearance in court, Met. Pavel was allowed to serve a moleben at the entrance to the monastery with a few dozen brethren and pilgrims.
