The first Russian Orthodox church in Australia celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sunday with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and concert.

The service at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Kangaroo Point, Queensland, was led by His Grace Bishop George of Canberra, the local hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse, who is currently visiting Australia. They were joined by clergy from near and far and various Orthodox jurisdictions, reports TASS.

“Over the years of its existence, thousands of Orthodox Christians have prayed and received blessings here, wonderful priests have served here, and today the anniversary of this church is our common feast,” said parishioner Alexei.

The parish was founded in 1923 by Fr. Alexander Shabashev, who managed to buy a plot of land with a house on the outskirts of the city. In 1933, parishioners began raising funds to build a larger church on the same site, which was completed in 1936.

The service was also broadcast on a screen in the parish hall, which was also filled to capacity.

The celebration continued after the Divine Liturgy with a festive banquet and a performance by a Church choir and a concert by children’s and amateur groups.
