The church-museum sits at the foot of the Tsarevets Fortress, which served as the primary fortress of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393. The church itself was built in 1857-1858, replacing an earlier St. George Church.

An exhibition on “archaeological materials from the Sts. Peter and Paul monastery complex” was also opened in the church.
