On Sunday, July 2, the feast of the great Holy Hierarch St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco, a church was consecrated in his honor in Spain.

The Minor Consecration in Logroño, Spain, was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Peter of Kaffa, Vicar of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Patriarchal Exarch of Western Europe, reports the Diocese of Spain and Portugal.

His Grace then celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated church.

The church is on the territory of a former Franciscan monastery, which was given for temporary use to the Orthodox community in the city. The parish council is currently negotiating to purchase the premises.

St. John is among the beloved saints throughout the Orthodox world today. In June 2019, a church was consecrated in his honor at St. Elisabeth Convent in Minsk, and in December 2022, the foundation stone for a new Church of St. John was laid and consecrated on Tubabao Island in the Philippines.

Yesterday, July 4, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church formally added St. John to its liturgical calendar.
