Thousands celebrate Uncovering of Relics of St. Sergius at Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra (+VIDEOS)

Thousands of Orthodox faithful and a host of hierarchs and clergy came together at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra yesterday to celebrate the feast of the uncovering of the relics of the great 14th-century monastic father and founder of the monastery.

The feast began on Monday evening when His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and a number of hierarchs and clerics celebrated Small Vespers with an Akathist to St. Sergius in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where the relics of St. Sergius lie, reports Patriarchia.ru.

Later that evening, the Patriarch, hierarchs, and clerics celebrated the All-Night Vigil on the Lavra’s Cathedral Square.

The next morning, His Holiness led the Divine Liturgy on the Cathedral Square, joined by a host of hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Hierarchs and clerics of the Churches of Antioch, Serbia, the Czech Lands and Slovakia, and the Orthodox Church in America also joined in the celebration.

The services were broadcast on large screens on the Lavra squares to accommodate the large number of pilgrims who came to pray to God and venerate St. Sergius.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a moleben to St. Sergius was served, after which Pat. Kirill proceeded to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where he venerated the relics of St. Sergius and those of the other saints that are treasured in the church.

A Bishops’ Conference is being held at the Lavra today, to discuss issues of Church life.
