His Eminence Archbishop Alexander of Dallas and the South and the Bulgarian Diocese of the Orthodox Church in America was hospitalized in South Carolina over the weekend.

The Archbishop attended the South’s Diocesan Assembly at St. John of the Ladder Church in Greenville, South Carolina, from July 18 to 21. Towards the end of the Assembly, His Eminence began to feel unwell and was taken to the hospital, reports the Holy Cross Church form Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Archpriest Marcus Burch, Diocesan Chancellor, sent the following email:

Earlier today His Eminence, Archbishop Alexander, was admitted to the Hospital in Greenville, SC. After a series of tests the physicians there have diagnosed him with probable pneumonia and the potential for sepsis. During the next several days, His Eminence will be under medical care at the hospital. He eagerly anticipates returning to his Archpastoral duties once his health allows, which we are hopeful will be soon.

We request that you keep Vladyka Alexander in your prayers, asking the Lord to grant him a swift recovery and continued good health.

According to the Bulgarian Diocese of Toledo of the OCA, of which Abp. Alexander is also the ruling hierarch, he was released from the hospital the next day:

On Friday, July 21, 2023, His Eminence, Archbishop Alexander, was admitted into hospital in Greenville, SC. He was kept overnight for observation and discharged the following day. Vladyka Alexander eagerly anticipates returning to his Archpastoral duties once his health allows. We request that you keep His Eminence in your prayers, asking the Lord to grant him continued good health.
