Clergy and faithful of the Greek island of Leros welcomed and venerated the skull and icon of the newly canonized St. Gavrilia, known as the “ascetic of love,” yesterday.

St. Gavrilia, who was canonized by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople earlier this week, spent the last years of her life and reposed on the island of Leros.

The reception of the relic was held in front of the city hall in Platanos, the capital of Leros. The event was attended by the clergy of the island, political leaders, representatives of the armed forces and security forces, organizations and associations, local figures, and a large number of believers, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.

After the official reception of the skull, Vespers, Orthros, and a nighttime Liturgy were celebrated in the adjacent Church of the Exaltation of the Cross by Metropolitan Paisios of Leros, Kalymnos, and Astypalea. A multitude of believers came to venerate the relic of St. Gavrilia.
