30-year-old Pennsylvania native elected Metropolitan of Mexico of Patriarchate of Constantinople

The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople elected a new Metropolitan of Mexico yesterday to replace Metropolitan Athenagoras, who was transferred to the Diocese of Vize in Turkey.

His successor is Archimandrite Iakovos Andriopoulos, a 30-year-old Pennsylvania native, reports Romfea.

Fr. Iakovos previously served as the General Vicar of the Church of Greece’s Archdiocese of Athens.

He attended high school in Germany and then studied at the Holy Cross School of Theology in Boston. He completed postgraduate studies at the University of Exeter, concentrating on “Ethnophyletism” and “The Face of the Refugee.”

He is a native speaker of both English and Greek and also speaks Italian, Spanish, and German.

He has served as the Secretary of External Affairs and Social Programs for the Holy Metropolis of New Ionia and Philadelphia. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Churches of Europe for Migration and an alternate member of the Board of Directors of the Council of European Churches.

He has served as a representative of the Church of Greece and as a member of the delegation to the World Council of Churches. He has also served as the Director of Development at the Ecclesiastical Central Finance Service since 2020.
