The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the nation’s largest such association, with more than 360,000 members from every branch of the armed forces. It describes itself as “a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of military officers at every stage of their careers.”

Recently, an Orthodox priest was appointed to two high positions within the association.

As reports the Orthodox Church in America’s Diocese of New York and New Jersey, Archpriest Peter Baktis, rector of the Mother of God, Joy of All Who Sorrow Church in Princeton, New Jersey, is now a member of the MOAA’s 36-member board of directors and the organization’s national chaplain.

Fr. Peter has served as the president of the Lakes and Pines Chapter in New Jersey, and is currently the president of the Chaplain Virtual Chapter and the NJ Council of Chapters.

In 2015, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada presented Fr. Peter with a gramota signed by all members of the Holy Synod in honor of his 25 years of service in the U.S. army and his 30 years of priestly ministry, as well as the Order of St. Innocent Silver Class to Fr. Peter and his wife Matushka Jeanne.
