San Francisco’s Holy Virgin Cathedral-Joy of All Who Sorrow is in need of urgent renovations.

The construction of the cathedral was completed under St. John (Maximovitch) of San Francisco, and has been the home of his incorrupt and wonderworking relics since his repose in 1966.

And now, the cathedral community has an issued an appeal for donations towards the renovations project.

The Fundraising Committee writes on the dedicated GoFundMe page:

We come before you with a heartfelt appeal to join us in restoring the sacred beauty and functionality of the Holy Virgin Cathedral of San Francisco, the cherished resting place of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco’s relics. Our cathedral, a sanctuary of spiritual solace and communal strength, is in urgent need of renovations to continue serving as a beacon of hope and faith for all who enter its doors.

Our first priority is the revitalization of the iconostasis. Time has taken its toll on the iconostasis, including the delicate gold leaf which has dulled and worn off over the years. Restoring the gold leaf to its original luster will support the solemn and divine daily services at the Cathedral. Modern restoration techniques will ensure this gilding will last for decades to come.

In addition to the iconostasis, the worn-out and damaged carpet runner in our cathedral demands replacement. This carpet, which has faithfully served our congregation for years, requires renewal to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for all who tread its path.

Furthermore, we envision remodeling our communal hall to create a space conducive to educational and cultural enrichment. With your support, we plan to host lectures on Orthodoxy, providing valuable insights into our religious traditions and fostering a deeper understanding among our parishioners and the broader community. Additionally, a refurbished hall will allow us to host a wider array of cultural and community events, from art exhibitions to music performances, strengthening the bonds of kinship among our parishioners and neighbors alike.

Your generous contributions will play a vital role in the restoration of the Holy Virgin Cathedral of San Francisco. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to our collective goal of preserving our sacred space for generations to come.

Together, let us unite in faith and action to ensure that the Holy Virgin Cathedral of San Francisco remains a beacon of light, love, and divine grace in our ever-changing world.

The campaign has raised $4,320 out of the $95,000 goal at the time of writing of this article.
