The New Chersonesos museum-church complex in Crimea, commemorating the site where St. Vladimir was baptized, will open to the public on July 30.

His Eminence Metropolitan Tikhon of Simferopol and Crimea, the head of the Patriarchal Cultural Council who has overseen the project for several years, presented the project at a special press conference on Tuesday, July 23, reports the Metropolis of Crimea.

New Chersonesos will be able to receive up to 50,000 guests per day, and according to Met. Tikhon, will be the largest historical-archaeological park in Russia. Admission is free.

“The Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium is the largest part of the park. Previously, when it was located in the premises of the monastery, the expositions occupied a little more than 1,000 square meters, now it’s 10,000 square meters. These expositions are modern, adapted for convenient, informative museum exhibits. The area of the Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium is 22,000 square meters. Its exhibits will be artifacts collected over the past 200 years and discovered during recent excavations,” said Met. Tikhon.

“This project is unprecedented for Sevastopol and our country,” said Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev. “These are the origins of our culture, spiritual and moral values, and historical choice.”

The creation of the unique complex was accompanied by the largest archaeological excavations in modern history, said Elena Morozova, director of the Tauric Chersonesos National Reserve. Nearly 7 million artifacts have been uncovered.

The complex, including the Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium, the Museum of Christianity, the Museum of Crimea, and more, will be consecrated on July 28, the feast of St. Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles and Baptizer of Rus’.

The St. Vladimir Chersonesos Monastery was revived earlier this year, with daily services beginning April 1.
