Ukraine has taken another cathedral from the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, this time through the court system and a fake parish vote.

After a first-instance court and an appeals court ruled to take the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Kanev (Cherkasy Diocese) away from the Church, the Ukrainian Supreme Court brought the matter to a close this week, also ruling against the Church, transferring the cathedral to state ownership, reports Suspilne.

The Holy Dormition Cathedral is one of the oldest in Ukraine, founded by Grand Duke Vsevolod Olgovich of Kiev on June 9, 1144. It was originally named in honor of St. George.

In 2003, the Executive Committee of the Kanev City Council granted the UOC permission to register ownership of the church. However, in the present case, prosecutors argued that this transfer was illegal, given that the cathedral is a cultural heritage monument, and the courts agreed.

Thus, the cathedral was handed over to state ownership. It was recognized as an archaeological monument of national significance in 1965, and as an Immovable Monument of Ukraine in 2009.

It is also claimed that 450 believers voted to transfer the church to the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine,” though it is well known that the OCU and local authorities regularly stage fake votes, relying on people who have no connection with the parish in question.

Cathedral clergy specifically stated that the organizer of the meeting has absolutely no connection to the cathedral.
