Prokuplje, Toplica District, Serbia, September 11, 2024
The Church of St. Procopius the Great Martyr in Prokuplje in southern Serbia celebrated its 1,090th anniversary on Monday, September 9.
It is the second oldest church in Serbia today and since 1386, home to the relics of its patron saint.
The feast was led by the local hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Arsenije of Niš, joined by local and visiting clergy, the diocese reports.
The festive Divine Liturgy was followed by the opening of an academic conference at the Toplica National Museum dedicated to this significant jubilee.
After the opening of the conference, a memorial service was held at the central town square, the Square of Toplica Heroes, for the fallen of Toplica who gave their lives in defense of faith and fatherland during the tragic years of World War I, as well as the renowned Toplica Uprising.
Prokuplje also remembered the unveiling and consecration of the monument to the fallen of Toplica in 1934 on the occasion of the millennium of the Church of St. Procopius, when Serbian Patriarch Varnava (Rosić) and King Alexander Karađorđević came to the town.
