Over the summer, some children playing in a river found an icon of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos that was painted more than a century ago.

The icon, painted in 1911, was discovered in the Adrov River in Orsha on June 15 when the children, who were fishing, caught a box. Unable to open it, they started jumping on it when suddenly they saw an icon peeking through the seaweed covering the box. The children were frightened and ran away, but the next day, their grandmother brought it to Holy Dormition Monastery, worried about the fate of her grandchildren for dancing on an icon, reports the Vitebsk Diocese.

The nuns reassured the grandmother that the children would be fine, said Abbess Susanna.

Igumen Nil (Podobed), dean of monasteries of the Vitebsk Diocese, blessed the icon and served a moleben before it, after which it was given to the Holy Dormition Church.

On June 18, a large group of invalids from Moscow came to visit the monastery, then a group of 40 people from Lugansk unexpectedly arrived as well. They tearfully prayed and chanted hymns before the icon for an hour, entreating help for their loved ones.

After the icon dried out, an inscription dating it to 1911 could be read.

The icon was restored and is now in the St. Elijah Church of the Holy Dormition Monastery.
