On Monday, September 16, a private Orthodox elementary school within the Vidin Diocese of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church opened its doors for its first academic year.

The new school is considered a continuation of the diocesan school that was opened and consecrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Neofit of Vidin 90 years ago. It is named in honor of the respected hierarch, who served the diocese from 1914 to 1971.

The opening of the new school began with the blessing of water celebrated by His Holiness Patriarch Daniil and two priests, reports the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

The Patriarch was the Metropolitan of the Vidin Diocese before his recent election to the primatial throne and continues to serve as temporary administrator.

Greeting the teachers, students, and guests of the school, the Patriarch stressed that the education of the young generation must include courses on Orthodoxy, “because we can’t understand the world around us if we don’t learn to love it following the example of God’s love for the world. We can’t know the creation if we don’t know its Creator.”

Other presenters pointed out the role of education in Christian virtues for the younger generation and how important it is for children to grow up in an environment that teaches them faith, forgiveness, respect, tolerance, and other qualities that will make them honorable, responsible individuals.

The Bulgarian Holy Synod has produced a series of textbooks on “Religion—Christianity—Orthodoxy” to be used in all grades of Bulgarian schools.
