Ephesus, September 24, 2024
On Sunday September 22, a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated the Divine Liturgy on the ruins of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Ephesus, where the Third Ecumenical Council was held.
Recall that the Russian Church began forming communities on the canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Constantinople when the latter entered into communion with the Ukrainian schismatics in October 2018 and created the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” later that year. The Russian Holy Synod severed communion with Constantinople in October 2018.
The service this weekend was celebrated by Fr. Georgy Sergeev, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s parishes in Turkey, reports the Department for External Church Relations.
The Liturgy was attended by pilgrims from Istanbul, Izmir, Kuşadası, and even Cambridge.
In his homily, Fr. Georgy explained the dogmas of the Third Ecumenical Council, which overthrew the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that there are two persons in Christ.
The service was held with permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as the 5th-century church is located in the Ephesus city museum.
The Russian Church currently has 14 parish communities throughout Turkey, the majority of which are served by Fr. Georgy Sergeev, who arrived in Turkey in November 2018.
