The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Murovanka, Grodno Province, in western Belarus celebrated its 500th anniversary this week.
The Divine Liturgy for the occasion on Tuesday, October 1, was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Anthony of Grodno, surrounded by a host of clerics, reports the Belarusian Orthodox Church.

At the Little Entrance, Fr. Oleg Zasim was awarded the right to wear the kamilavka in consideration of his hard work for the glory of the Church of God.
During the service, a special prayer for peace was read.
Following the Liturgy, Abp. Anthony attended a concert featuring several local musical groups, including a children’s choir.

The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Murovanka, built in 1524, is a unique architectural monument that also served as a fortress. Some researchers believe it may date back even to the 15th century, based on archaeological evidence and local church tradition. The church’s defensive features included a passage within its walls, two crypts beneath it, and a heavy iron gate at the main entrance.
Throughout its history, the church endured various challenges, including bombardment during the Swedish-Russian war and periods of neglect. It underwent several renovations, with significant changes made in 1871-1872, including raising the western towers and adding a bell tower. The church changed hands between different religious groups and was even used as a granary after World War II. In 1989, parishioners successfully reopened the church, which now stands as an important spiritual and historical monument of ancient architecture.
