Patriarch Kirill offers condolences after Azerbaijan Airlines crash in Kazakhstan

On the morning of December 25, 2024, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane flying from Baku to Grozny, Chechnya crashed near Aktau in western Kazakhstan. According to media reports, there were 69 people on board, with about 30 survivors.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia expressed condolences to the President of Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Board, as well as to the families of the deceased and injured:

Your Excellency, deeply respected Ilham Heydarovich!

Please accept my sincere condolences regarding the plane crash near Aktau in Kazakhstan, which resulted in the death and serious injury of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan. I ask you to convey words of comfort and support to their families and loved ones, as well as wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.

Together with the clergy of the Baku Diocese, I offer prayers to the merciful Creator that He may comfort the hearts of the grieving and wounded and strengthen all those affected by the tragedy.
