The Romanian Orthodox Church’s Metropolia of the Americas broadened its missionary outreach in Colombia this month.

A Romanian Orthodox priest first visited the country in April 2021

, and the Romanian Orthodox Mission of St. John of Wallachia in Barranquilla was formally established in the summer of 2023.

The mission, under the guidance of Fr. Esteban Díaz, has been working to strengthen ties with Orthodox communities in the region, and on February 15–16, the priest and parish cantor visited Bucaramanga, the capital and largest city of the department of Santander, “where they had the opportunity to share the Orthodox faith with the brothers and sisters in this area,” the Metropolia reports.

During the visit, Fr. Esteban met several Orthodox families and celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Afterwards, he heard confessions and celebrated the blessing of water.

The visit was part of the Mission of St. John of Wallachia’s ongoing effort “to spread the light of the Orthodox faith throughout Colombia, and the missionary activities in Bucaramanga are just beginning.”

Fr. Esteban and his missionary group have established a strong groundwork for upcoming spiritual and educational initiatives in the region, with plans to visit again in the coming months.

The Mission of St. John of Wallachia “continues to be a beacon of hope and love for all those seeking a deep connection with Orthodoxy,” the Metropolia writes. “The church remains a place of communion and traditions that unite, a presence full of love and support for all those who wish to live their Orthodox faith.”
