A historic Russian Orthodox church is keeping the faith in the family.
After over 54 years as rector, the Very Rev. Mitred Archpriest John D. Sorochka of St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Mayfield retired on Jan. 16. He has passed the torch to his son, the Rev. Nathaniel Sorochka, who is carrying on the role at the 134-year-old church.
The Russian Orthodox community has resided within and around St. John’s Cathedral since the 1880s, while Mayfield was still a growing coal mine town. The Sorochkas told how the Russian Orthodox immigrants loved the valley, as it reminded them of their home.
