His Grace Bishop Nicholas of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America’s Diocese of Miami and the Southeast underwent a successful heart surgery earlier this month.

“Last week the Lord granted me an unscheduled appointment with some very skilled physicians, who performed a bit of ‘preventive maintenance’ on my heart,” His Grace wrote in an announcement on May 20.

He was able to receive Holy Unction on the morning of the procedure, “which was a great consolation.”

Bp. Nicholas informs the faithful that he “will remain spiritually present and in touch with diocesan life—simply at a lower speed for a little while.” His recovery is expected to take a few weeks.

He concludes:

The Apostle exhorts us: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2) Your prayers now help to bear mine. Be assured that, once the stitches are out and the blessed nurses have released me from their watchful custody, I shall be back to sharing yours with renewed zeal—and, I trust, an even steadier heartbeat.

Bp. Nicholas has served the Diocese of Miami, today consisting of 43 parishes and missions in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, since October 2017.
