Nearly 700 private clinics throughout Russia now refuse to perform abortions, says Fr. Feodor Lukianov, Patriarchal Commission on Family, Motherhood and Childhood Protection.

At a TASS press conference on May 30, Fr. Feodor specified that 686 private clinics voluntarily refuse to perform abortions. This figure has jumped 28.9% just this year, as there were 532 such clinics in late January.

The priest also highlighted that measures to support Church initiatives concerning abortion restrictions have been adopted in 87 regions throughout the country, making a marked impact. These include refusing licenses for performing abortions, laws prohibiting incitement to abortion, and other measures.

“But we would very much like regional heads who have not yet joined this initiative to participate more boldly in this, because they will later have to report to the president about birth rates in their region… All stimulating measures begin to work only when restrictive measures are introduced” Fr. Feodor said.

And more and more requests are coming from administrations across the country for the issued to be resolved on the federal level. Currently, abortions are performed for free with the state’s compulsory medical insurance (upon request through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy; in cases of rape and certain other circumstances up to 22 weeks; or at any time for medical reasons).

“All measures—legal, organizational, and restrictive—should pursue one goal: every child that the Lord sends here should be born in our country, because no one is superfluous to God,” the head of the Patriarchal Commission concluded.
